The West Meade area was originally owned by Mrs. Mary Jackson, wife of U.S. Senator Howell Jackson – a gift from her father. In the early to mid 1950s, the property was subdivided and developed into the West Meade and Hillwood neighborhoods.

The houses in West Meade and Hillwood are all unique and individual, having been built at different times by the individual owners. Lots range from 0.5 acres to 6 acres, but the average home in West Meade has just over an acre of land.
If you take a drive through the West Meade neighborhood, two things will stick out as uniquely pleasant – the quiet and the large trees. Many of the trees were here long before the 50s, and still stand tall. Also, there is a beautiful natural spring creek, complete with a waterfall and rapids that run beside Jocelyn Hollow.

In 1883, Gen. William G. Harding gave his daughter, Mary, 2600 acres of his farm, Belle Meade. The same year, Mary and her husband, U. S. Senator Howell E. Jackson, bought a 131-acre farm adjoining that tract. They built this home at a cost of $14,905. During his lifetime, Howell was a U. S. Senator and a justice on both the U. S. 6th Circuit Court and the U. S. Supreme Court. The house remained in the family until 1944 when the farm was sold and subdivided.
